  • WIAT-III (Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, Third Edition)
  • WAIS-IV (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition)
  • Vineland-3 (Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales, Third Edition)

These tools allow us to provide tailored insights into cognitive functioning, learning, and adaptive behaviour across all ages.

What Are Cognitive & Educational Assessments?

Cognitive and educational assessments provide valuable insights into how a person thinks, learns, and processes information. They help answer important questions such as:

  • Does my child, teen, or adult family member have a learning difficulty (e.g., dyslexia, dyscalculia)?
  • How do memory, attention, and processing speed affect learning or workplace performance?
  • Is my child gifted, or is an adult showing advanced cognitive strengths?
  • What specific supports can help an individual succeed at school, university, or work?
  • What adaptive or daily living skills may need extra support?

By using these evidence-based tools, our psychologists create a detailed picture of cognitive strengths, areas for growth, and personalised recommendations.

WISC-V: Understanding Cognitive Abilities

The WISC-V is one of the most widely used tools for assessing cognitive development in children and adolescents aged 6 years –16 years 11 months. It measures areas such as:

  • Verbal comprehension (understanding and using language)
  • Visual-spatial reasoning (problem-solving with images and patterns)
  • Working memory (holding and using information in the moment)
  • Processing speed (how quickly information is understood and applied)

These insights can help explain why a child may be excelling in one area but finding another more challenging.

WIAT-III: Assessing Academic Achievement

The WIAT-III is an educational assessment that evaluates how a child or young person aged 4–19 is performing academically compared to peers. It covers areas such as:

  • Reading accuracy, comprehension, and fluency
  • Spelling and written expression
  • Mathematical problem-solving and fluency
  • Oral expression and listening comprehension

This information helps schools, teachers, and parents develop personalised learning strategies that build on strengths and address challenges.

WAIS-IV: Cognitive Assessment for Adults

The WAIS-IV is the leading tool for assessing cognitive functioning in adults aged 16–89. It explores:

  • Verbal reasoning and comprehension
  • Perceptual reasoning and problem-solving
  • Working memory and attention
  • Processing speed

This assessment can be invaluable for understanding workplace challenges, supporting university students, identifying giftedness, or exploring cognitive changes over time.

Vineland-3: Adaptive Behaviour Assessment

The Vineland-3 measures an individual’s adaptive functioning—the everyday skills needed for independent living. It is often used with both children and adults aged from birth90 years to assess:

  • Communication skills
  • Daily living skills (e.g., self-care, money management, organisation)
  • Socialisation and interpersonal skills
  • Motor skills (where relevant)

This assessment is particularly helpful for individuals with suspected or diagnosed developmental, intellectual, or neurodiverse conditions, as it guides tailored support plans.

Why These Assessments Matter

Cognitive and educational assessments provide practical benefits, including:

  • Early identification of learning difficulties or giftedness
  • Evidence for school- or workplace-based support plans, such as Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) or workplace accommodations
  • Guidance for parents, teachers, and employers to better understand unique needs
  • Support for further assessments, such as ADHD or autism assessments, if required
  • Empowerment for individuals, helping them understand their own learning and thinking style

Who Conducts the Assessments?

At Spencer Mental Healthcare, these assessments are currently conducted by Fionna Hamilton, an experienced psychologist trained in administering and interpreting the WISC-V, WIAT-III, WAIS-IV, and Vineland-3. Fionna provides a warm, supportive environment to ensure children, adolescents, and adults feel comfortable throughout the process.
